“Hello, hello I’m Devon Smiley, negotiation consultant and speaker. And I’m on a mission to help people build the skills they’re going to need to have and ask for what they want, need and deserve whether that’s in business or in life. So I’m here to share a bit of an update on where I am since I spent my time in the hot seat.
And before I got in the hot seat, I was nervous. I’m going to admit, I was a little scared. But once I got in there it was actually a really safe, comforting place.
And I felt incredibly privileged to have that. Because I know we’re all so busy. So to be able to get someone’s attention like that was just fabulous. And it really made me feel as though they were hearing what I was saying. And doing their absolute best to help me in my path.
Now after I got out of the hot seat, it was like having two or three shots of espresso.
I jumped into action right away. Grabbed my notebook started mapping out some new ideas. Noodling around with some new ways of phrasing what I do for people based on the feedback I received. And since my time in the hot seat, there have been three things that I’ve really been focusing on.
The first, and this happened immediately, the very next thing I posted on social media, already incorporated this change. And that is focusing on communicating with people the greater value in learning how to ask. It’s not just about the dollars and cents, it’s not just about landing a client at a higher rate. There’s so much more that goes along with it. It’s so much more empowering. And such a skill we can use for years and years. So I started changing my language around that.
The second thing I did was start mapping out a specific challenge. It’s going to be either three days or five days. I’m thinking five days, where we flex our asking muscles together. Because you’ve got to keep doing it. You’ve got to show up every day and make the ask. Even if it’s just a tiny one. So I’m cooking that up. Working on the details now to be able to help people cultivate those skills.
Now the third thing I’m doing is, I’ve already launched it, it’s a beta round of my new mentorship program. Because I wanted to be abler to focus on working one on one with people. To help them cultivate these skills. Figure out what on Earth they want to ask for in the first place. The skill they’re going to need to do it. And then a good little kick in the butt, because you sometimes need someone to hold your feet to the fire so you don’t chicken out of making your ask. So the beta is underway right now. It’s going really well, knock on wood. And I’ll be developing it more fully so that it comes out in the Fall of 2018.”
