It’s true what they say in the business world: it can be lonely at the top.
Not necessarily because you’re isolated from the people below you. But because sometimes, and especially for entrepreneurs, there isn’t anyone below you. Or beside you. Or above you.
It’s just you and your big idea. Sitting at home, or at your neighborhood coffee shop, or at your small rented office, trying to make things happen.
Solopreneur isolation: it’s a real thing.
Rebecca Undem is very familiar with this. She traded a corporate job in a mid-sized city for building her own biz in a very small town.
As a speaker and author, Rebecca’s business is all about “helping women see the potential for their lives. Basically, reminding them that they don’t have to live a small life just because they might have a zip code that is small.”
While helping other women, Rebecca was struggling with feeling disconnected in her own community, which has very few people with their own businesses that she could relate to.
She started looking for a solution. In her own words, something that would get “other people’s brains on my business besides my own.”
Enter Kickass Masterminds: masterminds for entrepreneurs.
In the coupel of years since she joined Kickass Masterminds, Rebecca has gone from socially isolated entrepreneur to confident CEO with a family of “biz besties.”
“It has been the biggest game-changer not just for my business, but for me as a person. I can’t imagine where I’d be without them.”

Finding the Wrong Mastermind For Entrepreneurs
Before Rebecca found Kickass Masterminds, she belonged to another mastermind group — sort of. It was an add-on in a membership group she was a part of and it really wasn’t a mastermind group.
“I hadn’t experienced a mastermind group that felt beneficial or impactful,” Rebecca says. “I got that taste of connection that is really important for me, but never had I experienced anything that pushed me forward as a business owner.”
Lesson: if it’s not pushing you forward, it’s not the right group for you.
Identifying the Right Mastermind For Entrepreneurs
When Rebecca found Kickass Masterminds, two factors cued her into the fact that it was the right entrepreneurial mastermind group for her: curation and facilitation.
The curation process
“The curation is a big deal because for the level of involvement and disclosure that we have with one another, we have to have complete trust in the people that are in our masterminds,” says Rebecca.
“The curation process that Kickass Mastermind used to find my biz besties… it’s a lot of science, a lot of data gathering and analyzing, and a whole lot of magic.”
The group facilitation
“I love the dedicated facilitator … [They’re] about keeping us accountable and about ensuring that we get out of the experience what we’re supposed to get out of it,” Rebecca says.
“The tools and framework make such a difference, versus something that’s solely peer-led, which I’ve been involved with before. They’re not as valuable.”
Lesson: look for a mastermind for entrepreneurs that has the qualities that are important to YOU.
Letting Community Happen
Having flown solo for so long, Rebecca wasn’t used to giving others a behind-the-scenes look at her biz. Starting out with Kickass Masterminds was a bit nerve-wracking (which is normal!).
“[I thought] ‘I hope these people are as cool as I think they’re going to be and I hope they think I’m cool,'” Rebecca says, “Very much those first-day-of-school feelings. But it all turned out amazing.”
By remaining open to the experience and trusting the curation process that brought her group together, Rebecca found herself with a whole crew of “mastermind besties” in no time.
“They literally are my business lifelines. I call on them for everything,” she says. “They are in lieu of coworkers for me. I do not work with people. I work completely by myself. That’s what they do for me.”
Lesson: opening yourself up to your mastermind peers is incredibly rewarding.
Accepting — and — Applying Advice and Insight
“A lot of the best ideas I’ve put into play in my business have come from my business mastermind.”
Rebecca’s business has changed a lot as a result of belonging to Kickass Masterminds. By welcoming the advice, guidance and suggestions of her mastermind group, she’s made some fundamental improvements to help get her business to where she wants it to be.
Since joining the group, Rebecca has:
- Significantly changed her basic product offering, requiring less time and making more money
- Created an entirely new wing of her business, stepping into the world of non-profits
- Finally started thinking of herself as a CEO and embracing the responsibility and power that comes with that
“[My business] really can grow, and grow beyond just the confines of my small town. It’s the most excited I’ve ever been about my business and the role I get to play in it,” Rebecca says.
Lesson: implementing the perspectives and suggestions of your mastermind group can be game-changing.
Reaping Returns on the Mastermind Investment
Like office space or a website, a mastermind group is an investment in your business. It’s not free, but the cost is paid for and then some by the results it has for your business.
In Rebecca’s case, the returns of her investment in a mastermind group fall into two categories:
“The fact that I was able to earn more revenue with investing less time just based on the tweaks we talked about in the group, that alone was a huge win. Who doesn’t want to make more money and spend less time at it?”
“I’ve been saved so much money from not having made mistakes on purchasing things, programs and resources I didn’t actually need. That is really hard to quantify, but it’s huge … you’ve got all these people that have seen and done and tried different things. They can share their experience and save you a lot of heartache and wasted expenses.”
Lesson: a good mastermind for entrepreneurs is an investment — not an expense — with high returns
