There are three things that stressed-out business owners can do to shake off the business blahs and refocus their energy.

  1. Brew  coffee
  2. Drink bourbon
  3. Join a mastermind group

Personally, I’m a fan of all three tactics.

Buuuut it’s that last one that I recommend the most to my fellow entrepreneurs looking to make some serious moves with their business.

If they’re ready.

Mastermind groups can be a total game-changer for business owners (check out how they changed my life), but only if it’s the right time to join one.

To take full advantage of the crazy amazing benefits of mastermind groups, you and your business need to be at the right stage.

So, SHOULD you join a mastermind group? Are you ready?

This guide will help you figure it out.

When You’re Full-Time

The first indication that you’re ready to join a mastermind group is when you officially go full-time in your business.

The stakes are suddenly much, much higher.

You have to make your idea work so that nobody goes hungry and the lights stay on. And you need all hands on deck to make it happen.

Enter a mastermind group.

When you make that badass shift from side-hustler to full-time CEO, you absolutely need the support and accountability that a group of peers in a mastermind provides.

Don’t join a mastermind group before you’re full-time in your biz. No siree. Classic rookie move. You won’t have much to offer and the group’s advice to you won’t be of much use.

Masterminds full of new business owners miss the entire point of masterminding: sharing first-hand experiences and hard-won lessons with each other.

When you’re new, you can’t share those experiences because you simply haven’t had them yet.

Newbie groups often end up being a gang of well-meaning folk regurgitating what they’ve heard in online courses or read in books. Second-hand information ain’t good for nobody.

If you’re new to this whole entrepreneurship thing, focus on laying the foundations for your business and learn, learn, learn as much as you possibly can from books, courses, mentors, and coaches.

When you’re a full-time business owner, then it’s time for a mastermind group.

When You Want to Get to the Next Level

There comes a time in most people’s businesses when they reach a tipping point: take a huge leap to the next level or continue to operate as is.

IF you have the burning desire to take your business to the next stage, you can’t go it alone. Well, you can, but it’s going to be harder and take you longer.

Instead, surround yourself with people who want to help you. Who know how to help you.

You’ll go so much further and faster if you’re part of a crew of awesome, like-minded CEOs who can help you create a plan of attack for taking your biz up a notch.

It’s at this point in your business, at that moment when you decide to level up, where a mastermind group can give you the most possible value.

When Courses and Coaching Aren’t Quite Right

Sometimes, an online course is exactly what the doctor ordered.

Need to learn about photo editing or finding the right hashtags? You’ll be able to find an online course that shows you the ins and outs.

Sometimes, a business coach is what you need.

A one-on-one experience with a subject matter expert who tailors everything they know about their niche for your business. You’ll need to pay a pretty penny for a good one, but you’ll get personalized attention.

But what if you need to learn about many business topics, not just one, and at the exact moment that you need that particular info, not when it comes up in the curriculum?

And what if you want to have real conversations with several people who know their stuff, not self-study by watching videos and doing worksheets?

What if you need information, but also personalized advice and deep wisdom and strategies that apply to your unique situation?

If you’ve been looking for business support, but neither a course or coach seems to fit the bill, taking part in a mastermind group might just be the ticket. A mastermind often fills the gaps left by online courses and coaching experiences.

Here’s how to decide between a course, a coach, and a mastermind.

When You’re Feeling Stuck AF

Ever feel like you get paralyzed because you just don’t know which route to take?

How about not being able to leap forward on something because you have zero confidence that it’s the right move?

We can’t have all the answers, friend. No one does. It’s easy to get jammed up when we just don’t know which way to go.

The good news is that most of the time, we simply need to talk it out with some other smart people who *get* what we’re going through.

Their insight and experience can help us find the clarity and confidence we need to move forward like the bosses we are.

If you’re not sure which way is up or down in your business and you’re struggling to make your next move, it’s not time to throw in the towel. It’s time to seek out and join a mastermind group.

Your mastermind peers will be there for you 24/7 to help you carve the right path and to give you the confidence you need to run down it without looking back.

When You’re Tired of Going It Alone

When you’re sick and tired of trying to figure everything out by yourself, it’s time to enlist in a mastermind group.

Many of us business owners don’t have a co-founder, let alone a senior leadership team or board of directors. We grind it out on our own, with loads of willpower, gumption, cussing, and caffeine.

We spend hours researching. Questioning ourselves. Making every single decision. Wondering if it’s all going to work.

Why continue to spend crazy amounts of time, energy, and moolah trying to solve problems solo and navigate learning curves when someone — aka, members of a mastermind group — has already been there, done that?

Think of a mastermind group like a well-rounded board of advisors for your business.

If you want to tap that kind of knowledge and expertise and alleviate some of the constant decision-making pressure, you’re well positioned to join a mastermind group.

So, Should You or Shouldn’t You Join a Mastermind Group?

If you’re going back and forth about whether a mastermind group is a right fit for YOU, ask yourself these three questions:

Am I ready and willing to try something different to take my business to the next level?

Am I ready and willing to open myself up to advice from others who have been in a similar boat?

Am I ready and willing to share what I have learned so far, to help other biz owners succeed?

If you answered yes, it’s time for a mastermind. Before you join any mastermind, make sure that you ask the right questions.
